Open Question: Camping location ideas?

So my brother, cousin, and I are goin camping next summer. We did it last year too we went up in the border waters in Minnesota and it was really fun. We are looking for a new place to go again. My brother wants to go to South Dakota and I like it except u can't have camp fires their and there aren't a whole lot of places to fish so if u guys have any ideas of a place we could go that is within a decent range of Wisconsin let me know try to keep it semi close to the Midwest. PS we like hiking, hunting(small game like birds and rabbits we just have small bows and a pellet gun), fishing, sitting around the campfire, swimming, the normal stuff. And most importantly we don't want to see very many people preferably nobody.

Family and the Olympics

Marcus

My Cousin is "gliding" - walking by holding onto furniture and scaring his parents as he tries to go from one island to the next. He isn't quite up to independent walking yet, but you get the feeling it is coming soon.

2010 Olympics

The Olympics have been a long time coming and they are finally here. I decided to wander around and check out some of the features. It's the Vancouver I remember, but a little different. The zip line across Robson Square is cool - apparently the line up was 6 hours on Saturday. The line up to get into the Bay (olympic store) was steady at 30 to 45 minutes.

The Olympic cauldron was nice to see - you can't get very close, but perhaps that makes it look better.

Olympic Cauldron Granville Street around Robson is closed and people mass there to see the "lanterns". The sea wall swarms with tourists.

String Art Outside Ontario HouseOn some of the old expo site (soon to be condo's) there are a number of "houses" - Quebec house (the giant Q), Saskatchwan house (the dome) and Ontario House (the string art). The houses don't have that much inside - usually some sort of food service showing off local wine and food. There is usually a photo display of local tourist attractions. Sochi House (Science World) has a large display by the 2014 winter Olympic site in Sochi, Russia. My favorite house was Northern Canada House - they had taxidermy models of northern animals you have your photo with.

False Creek Pano

Every night there is a small fireworks display in False Creek. The fireworks happens in concert with a laser display that shines images onto a spray of water. It's all very impressive.

Sea Salt Baked Potatoes

I don't know what happened, but it has been years since I've baked potatoes. And by baked potatoes, I mean the classic kind - crispy jackets split open to reveal a fluffy white potato interior. The kind of potato flesh that likes to drink butter and mainline salt. But, on a quick grocery run after returning from Marfa, the russets were calling me. I remembered a simple, sea-salt baked potato recipe in Nigel Slater's Tender, grabbed some arugula, and was pretty confident I had everything else I'd need at home.

Baked Potato Recipe

On the road trip front, a number of you have asked, somewhat incredulously, why we would drive to Marfa, Texas. To which I sort of tilt my head, and start thinking more about it. There seems to be a long answer and a short answer. The short? We went to see visit this. The longer answer - we drove through Palm Springs, and Valentine, Canyon de Chelly, and Willcox. And cooked at beautiful rest stops, and took lots of pictures, and caught up on magazines, and sat in the sun, and saw this, and ate dinner outside more nights than not. I've driven through the Southwest and parts of northern Mexico a good number of times now, and West Texas is particularly beautiful. When you're out in the middle of the desert, its quiet. So so so so quiet. I love it.

Baked Potato Recipe

The potatoes? Really good too - give them a go. The spicy arugula and luxe dressing works perfectly. Top with a fried egg, and you've got a meal on your hands. And for any of you who have {or will be) cooking recipes from Tender, feel free to join in here.

How Reservoir Draw Downs Can Improve Your Fishing

In the springtime, many man-made reservoirs are drawn down several feet by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Waters recede from banks all around these often massive bodies of water, exposing areas otherwise covered in deep, murky water. Reasons for this vary from power generation and irrigation to anticipation of heavy spring rains. Regardless of [...]
