How green is your home insulation?

Trying to decide what type of home insulation to use? Your primary goal should be to reduce the amount of energy it takes to heat and cool your home. But did you ever stop to think about the amount of energy that goes into producing insulation itself?

Green-building experts use the term "embodied energy" to describe the energy used to make any product, bring it to market and (eventually) dispose of it. To evaluate how green an insulation material is in terms of energy usage, you must weigh its embodied energy against the energy it saves when it's insulating a home. Using materials that save considerable amounts of a home's operating energy, even if the material's embodied energy is a bit higher, is a good direction," say the editors at GreenHomeGuide.com. "Using materials that save operating energy but have a low embodied energy is even better."

Open Question: When camping, what is a simple way to get rid of the bad smell of the vault toilets?

I'm looking for some sort of easy deoderizing options. So far I've found a sawdust idea, but are there any others? Thanks for your ideas! Okay, I won't put anything down it. I never considered it might cause problems for the people who clean it out. But chill a little with the animations, J-Bridge person, I seriously doubt that baking soda would make the outhouse explode. It appears there's simply an organization of some sort that collects sewage for compost reasons and doesn't want it to be chemically altered, stinky or not. But thanks everyone for your input, I'll just use air freshener. And don't try to tell me that febreze will react with the "caustic gasses" and kill me either, because I won't believe that either.

Open Question: Hiking Appalachian Trail MD-- need advice?

My friend and I wanted to hike for about 3 days, and we're thinking just going through MD via the Appalachian Trail might be a good idea. 41 miles-- 15mi days 1 & 2, 11mi day 3. Just wondering if this sounds feasible for 2 college students, in fairly good shape? Also, what's the terrain like in that area-- I'm in the early stages of researching it, so wanted to hear from people familiar with the area. Is it easier going south vs north or about the same? Is it super mountainous and unrealistic to hike that far in a day? Any hostels about that far apart along the way? Etc. Thanks in advance!

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

November has come; the days are contracting, tapering toward the solstice on December 21. A bit of advice from theancient world resonates: Carpe diem-seize the day. Seize a day that is imperceptibly shorter than the one that preceded it, and seize the next, which will be even briefer. Have an adventure. Drink life to the lees. Embark, and explore. And make your first stop Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
