Lime, Grapefruit and Ginger Juice

I wanted to let you know that a few of us are going to focus on cooking from Breakfast, Lunch, Tea: The Many Little Meals of Rose Bakery over the next two months. I've always liked the idea of cooking from one book for an extended time period, and we've been doing that lately. We did - Moro East last, and The Essential New York Times Cookbook before that. The more the merrier, we'd love to have you join us. To kick things off I decided to start with this beauty - a lovely yellow, citrus-centric Lime, Grapefruit and Ginger Juice.

Grapefruit Juice

It's still citrus season here in San Francisco, and this is a great way to use up a couple ruby red grapefruits. I don't really do the smoothie thing much these days, but I do love a good fruit juice blend. If you're looking for a jolt something bright, invigorating, spicy and citrusy - this is just the thing. It's a pick-me-up minus the caffeine. You steep grated ginger in a bit of sugared water, and then strain it into a lime & grapefruit juice blend. I like to sip it out of a tiny cordial glass with a big ice cube or mix it with sparkling water as an afternoon refresher. It has a good amount of kick, and you can feel it going down - in a good way.

Grapefruit Juice

I suspect there will be plenty of other recipes to discover in this cookbook. So please, feel free to join us. I think this is going to be a fun one to cook from. As I mention on the site, cafe classics are well-represented - scones, smoothies, multiple granolas, soups, salads, and sandwiches. But one of the things I appreciate about this book is the inclusion of recipes that feature natural sweeteners, and slightly off-beat whole grains and flours (quinoa / millet). The book includes many vegetarian recipes, quite a number of vegan recipes, gluten-free recipes, etc. Clearly this is a thoughtful compilation of recipes meant to be crowd-pleasers.

Related Link: For those of you who haven't visited 101 Cookbooks' little sister site - it's a place for the 101 Cookbooks community to help each other find the best cookbooks and recipes. A number of us have been using it quietly for the last year or so, sounding off about recipes we like from our favorite cookbooks. You can tell others which cookbooks have become indispensable to you, list off the recipes you like best from cookbook to cookbook, ask questions, and get inspired by what others have to share. You can let people know when you find a cookbook you love, or a recipe that turned out surprisingly good. It's a friendly place, and pretty relaxed.

Jaguar teams with Williams F1 to produce US$1.5 million C-X75 Hybrid Supercar

The Jaguar C-X75 concept shown last October in Paris,
is to be produced...

Jaguar’s stunningly beautiful C-X75 hybrid concept
that wowed Salon L’automobile last October in Paris,
is to be produced in a limited edition of 250 vehicles with prices beginning at GBP700,000 (US$1.15 million) and running to GBP900,000 (US$1.5 million). The C-X75 will be developed in association with Formula One constructor Williams F1 and though the specification has changed significantly from the Paris car the 330 km/h C-X75 will still be one of the fastest production cars in the world particularly off the line where its 0-60 mph time will be well under the magical 3.0 second mark. Similarly, the electric-only range has more than halved from the concept’s 110 km to just 50 km. The twin 80,000 rpm micro gas-turbine range extenders of the concept car have been replaced with a compact internal combustion engine and there are now two electric motors (one on each axle), instead of the concept’s four. How close the production model will come to the concept’s 780 bhp and 1600 Nm torque output was not revealed. .. Labels a la carte

Many products that try to do more than one thing end up doing nothing very well -- or get so complicated that they're hard to use. That said, we found an interesting exception while compiling our new report on label makers -- the Brother PT-2730. That full-featured label maker can print labels from a PC or Mac -- which makes all the computer's fonts available, along with graphics and templates. It can also be used as a stand-alone label maker. Owner-written reviews say this label maker is easy to set up and intuitive to use -- though integrating it with Microsoft Office might be puzzling for some. The Brother PT-2730 is also one of the most expensive label makers you can buy. If the PT-2730 is overkill for you, or if you need to print labels on special media for a specific purpose, we found lots of other great options as well.

Camping With Your Dog

What a wonderful opportunity to travel with your dog while enjoying the outdoors. Taking your dog camping with you can be a amazing experience. Know where your going before you plan a camping trip. Most national state parks and forest allow dogs at their camping sites. Certain areas might have restrictions so do your research before you grab your gear at www.nps.gov. You can also check out Kampgrounds of America. They have 500 locations across the U.S and Canada that are pet-friendly.

When you're ready to hit the road with your dog here are some tips:

  • Make sure your dog's ID tag is current. A great idea is to take a photo of your dog and have it with just in case they get lost.

  • Pack a pet first aid kit. Including flea and tick repellent & tweezers for removal of ticks.

  • Pack a sweater or coat so your dog can stay warm next to the campfire on those cold nights.

  • Make sure your dog's vaccinations are up to date and take copies with you.

  • Take a bed that can be portable and waterproof. Like this Compact Bed that is easy to roll up and take anywhere.

  • Take any medication needed. Make sure your dog gets a flea and tick treatment before you travel.

  • Take along portable food bowls and portable water bottles so your dog can stay happy and hydrated when you're out and about on walks or hikes. Your dog can also have their own dog backpack for the great outdoors.

  • Remember to bring your dog's crate and a dog car harness for those long car rides.

  • Most of all don't forget to be prepared for those messy times and take their grooming supplies and biodegradable poop bags.

  • For the car ride bring dog treats and dog toys to keep your dog content and entertained.
